Hard Hat and a Hammer: Measuring the Impact of Federal Infrastructure Spending

By Richard Branch, Chief Economist On Friday, November 5, the House of Representatives passed the nearly $1 trillion infrastructure bill, following months of uncertainty. Over the life of the funding, the programs will inject nearly $550 billion in new spending across a multitude of programs such as roads and bridges, water and sewer, broadband internet, rail, and enhancements to the electric grid. Additionally, the vote also approved a long-overdue five-year authorization for surface transportation (replacing the FAST Act) as well… Read More »Hard Hat and a Hammer: Measuring the Impact of Federal Infrastructure Spending

Measuring Tech Savviness, and Tech Needs, in the Construction Industry

Just how tech-friendly is the construction industry? It’s clear that contractors are increasingly relying on digital tools for their projects. But a new study by Dodge Data & Analytics reveals that only 34% of civil contractors in the US have adopted model-based technology, while 57% of those in the vertical building sector report using these tools. The adoption rate for field and project management tools is much higher: 61% among civil contractors, and 83% among vertical building contractors. The Dodge… Read More »Measuring Tech Savviness, and Tech Needs, in the Construction Industry

How GIS Data Is Impacting Design and Construction

By Steve Jones, Senior Director, Industry Insights Research Our physical world is a rich three-dimensional experience. While architectural and engineering design tools have been dramatically advancing to engage with 3D more effectively, geospatial (GIS) information has also been evolving from 2D maps into detailed surface, subsurface and land use datasets and visualizations. Now these exciting advancements are joining forces to provide fully informed 3D contextual environments.   The Industry Insights Research team at Dodge Data & Analytics recently released a study… Read More »How GIS Data Is Impacting Design and Construction

Artificial Intelligence Increasingly a Reality on Job Sites

“Open the pod bay doors, HAL.” From the creepily calm HAL 9000 in Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey to the trigger-happy WOPR computer of WarGames, most everyone knows the trope of artificial intelligence gone awry. On today’s construction sites, however, the prospects for AI appear to be far rosier. A recent article in EnterpriseAI spotlights three new job site technologies that promise to improve construction safety and efficiency, without all the murder and mayhem. One of them, from Buildots,… Read More »Artificial Intelligence Increasingly a Reality on Job Sites

Robot Assistants, Coming to a Construction Site Near You

With construction plagued by inefficiency, safety concerns, and labor shortages, the smart money is on robotics transforming the job site. The National Science Foundation, in particular, is betting $2 million on a consortium of researchers from the University of Florida, University of Michigan, and Washington State University, for their study pairing human workers with so-called “interactive robot assistants.” According to the University of Michigan’s University Record, the robots will learn how to learn on the job from their flesh-and-blood mentors.… Read More »Robot Assistants, Coming to a Construction Site Near You

The Next Phase of the Digital Transformation of the Construction Industry

I have been in AEC for almost 50 years, and since 2006 I have been producing a series of free research studies on global construction technology at Dodge Data & Analytics. From my vantage point, I believe we’re around a third of the way into what will be looked back on as about a 30-year technology-driven transformation of the entire global design, construction, and built-asset management industry, from AI-enhanced design to extensive industrialization of the build process to digital twins… Read More »The Next Phase of the Digital Transformation of the Construction Industry

Dodge CEO Dan McCarthy Discusses the Future of Construction Market Data

Software giant Trimble recently sat down with Dodge Data & Analytics CEO Dan McCarthy for a conversation about the evolving state of building-industry data. Here are some highlights from the video interview: Our goals center around identifying and quantifying a project as soon as it’s gone into planning. … If I’m an architect, I want to know what projects are coming on stream and who the owner is so that I can reach out to them and win the business.
